How dominant representations of teenagers reflect the collective identity?

Specific channels and stations which target teenagers through music programming eg kiss 100 :

There are several radio stations which have different genres which attracts different audiences. Teenagers are difficult to put in one sector, which brings the dilemma that radio stations like kiss100 have to cater to all teenagers. During the day the radio station plays music of pop culture, which the majority of teenagers who they have generalised listen to. You will hear the likes of lady gaga and Beyonce streaming out of the Radio; however at night time they cater to a different culture. Dub step is played 11:00 till 2:00 on Wednesday nights, which is good as teenagers that are interested and listen to that music can also get their time to enjoy the radio. Kiss100 also has a night where they play dance floor music and hip hop on Sunday nights, this targets a different audience. This point outs that kiss 100 caters to all teenagers in all different genres of music and they target them buy advertising during the day time or evening to capture their audience before the show starts.

Self representation of teenagers through social media interaction with station/channel :

The representations of teenagers through social media is different, in TV shows and films teenagers are normally represented as the bad boys or bimbos that take boyfriends, there are also other representations where teenagers are classed as for example the emos, the Goths, the stoner, the geek. All these representations are also used on the internet and in social media. Teenagers seem to be the most misunderstood group in society as they near to children but are expected to act like adults. These different types of teenagers are catered to on radio stations, for example in kiss100 they have rock night for the Emos and rockers, evenings they play dance floor music and dubstep for the Ravers and stoners. They cater to all different music tastes and to all teenagers, they capture their target audience with the different types of music genres. Representation of teenagers on channels not targeted at teens eg radio4, classic fm : Radio Channels like classic fm do not really target or attract teenagers, their genre of music is more suited to people of different taste, for example people that actually enjoy and listen to classical music. Recently classic fm decided to expand their target audience by advertising to children in schools and high schools, this will promote classic music and make people more interested so their target audience increases, and this will benefit them very well.

Representations of teenagers in radio news bulletins – comparison between channels – language ideology:

Radio stations like kiss 100 have news bulletins however they are not as detailed as for example 94.9 FM. This difference of the two is that kiss100 gives small facts about the news on the day but there is no in depth analysis like they would do on a normal news show. Also the length of the news that they broadcast is short which indicates that they represent teenagers as having short attention span and will ultimately get bored if they sit through long news bulletins.

Discuss the ways in which disabled people are represented in the media|? It is important to say that the media has a significant amount of influence to society, however the influence it holds has not always benefited society in representing people in the right way, particularly in relation to disabled people they have not been represented in a positive manner. The media has contributed to the discrimination of disabled people. Media through out the ages has depicted disabled people in a way where they are only shown for their disability. In Shakespeare 1999 (64) points in his article that disability is a impairment. He says "impairment is made the most important thing" this indicates that the audience is only focusing on the impairment as the media has portrayed them in way where their disability is the only way the audience will connect with the characters. Disabled people's inability to interact with people in general is being exploited. However since the mid 1970's there has been much call from the disabled community for society to recognise disabled people as equals to non-disabled people. Non disabled people have become more open and the tension surrounding society when a disabled person enters room has slowly drifted. This change of heart was mainly influenced by the media and how they portrayed disabled people. The role of the media is a major part in changing the attitudes of disability, so when we see, hear anything negative towards disability we should understand that it is the understanding of the producers and directors, their decision and the role of disability in the media is swayed by their opinions and what they believe is the right representation of disabled people. The under representation of disabled in the employment sector has not risen in the 2005 skill resort stated that their was minor changes in employment rate of disabled people and another report stated that the 2.3% of the workforce are disabled. These statistics are not shown in media which indicates that disabled people are misrepresented.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of film openings)

- We started off by following the thriller convention we looked at films that were psychological thrillers which gave us an idea what we were going to do.
however in our film we decided to follow the same conventions by making the the audience more alert and involed in our movie.
Throughout the 2 minute seqeunce the audience we guessing n questioning.

The conventions that we have included into our opening seqeunce give a clue to our genre of film. for example the fast cut shots of the two characters experiencing some sort of trauma indicated this film is a psychological thriller.

The sound was also a source from the research we did it explores the convention of our genre as it adds tension and adds emotion to the film. this makes the audience more drawn to film and connect to the characters. the music we used was emotive and we recognised alot of psychological thrillers use emotive sound to make the audience connect with the characters.

Mass audience

I have been influenced by mass audience - watching a advert and wanting to buy what the advert was advertising.
QVC influences me a lot of the time.

The opinion i formed was that the product i was buying was something that would be useful to me and would be very useful to my household. ]

Facebook, youtube, twitter and movies have all influenced people to do a lot of things- Videos like the cinnamon challenge have influenced a lot of the public to do. These are all the different types of texts used.

Film 4

Film 4 - They make variety of different types of genre films - example the iron lady is drama while they made sexy beast is a gangster thriller. The difference of Genres shows how diverse Film 4 is.

Film Industry Questions.

Who Finances development of a film ?  - The people who finance the film are the companies in which the producers approach and asks to aid them in the movie by providing the money for the production.
There are a number of different people and companies the producer can come to.
- A film production company or to a public funding group like the Uk Film Council who can give money to the production or a Private investor.
In order for the companies to invest  in the production the producers offer future sales and production profits so the companies can give money to develop the script.

How does a film recoup the production the finance? -   Once the distributors have been paid the recoupment is the money that is profited back to pay the producer. They receive their profit from the dvd sales and broadcast of the film.

What is meant by distribution ?   A distribution company is vital if the film is going to reach the audience and in return the the company receives most of the revenue. They can also ask others to distribute the film in Rental shops and cinema retailers.
