How is the representation of age, family and relationships shown through the use of camera, mise en scene, editing and sound in this clip from Blackpool ?
The representations of age, family and relationships are shown through the camera shots. At first we see a medium angle shot coming up underneath the glass table revealing two adults sitting in a living room, they are both middle aged looking at each other. We recognize that they are middle aged due to the clothing they are wearing and the surroundings that they are sitting in. We know they have a relationship from the close perimeter; they are sitting next to each other.
The editing also shows back to back close up shots of their conversation which shows that they are both important to the camera as they receive the same amount of camera shots and space in the mise en scene. When the other characters arrive in the room we see a close up shot of all three adults and no close up shots on the younger female, this indicates the age range that is important in the show.
We also recognize the family relationships, when we see a long angle shot looking at the two pairs sitting on opposite sides of the sofa; this connotes to us the different family bonds that are being tide.
The clothing each pair are wearing are similar to the each other, one pair is wearing bright colours while the other pair are wearing more dull grey colours this confirms the relationship of each pair as they sit side by side.
The Aural sound we hear is the characters talking and there is a loud emphasis on their voices which indicates their importance they have in the show.
We can see the hostility and tension in the room by the verbal language used, the main male character is using hostile language towards the other male in the room, and we can hear this by the loudness of his voice and the word structure used in his speech. This connotes to us that there is rivalry between the two males and shows their relationship is more hostile than the other characters.
