How is ethnicity represented through camera, sound, mise en scene and editing in the clip from Hotel Babylon?
The first shot we see is a medium angle shot of a smart well dressed black man serving a white man sitting on a sun bed, the first stereotype we see is that the white man is superior to the black man as he is relaxing while the black man is serving him. We then see the camera pan across the swimming pool and we see the first character being startled by a new character. The new character is also black but he’s dressed differently which would bring another stereotype. The new character seems to have dreadlocks and silver hoop earring he is also using different verbal language compared to the first black character. The stereotype made from this new character is that he may be a ‘thug’ this coming from the dreadlocks the earring and the language he uses when he talks. However the first well dressed male seems to be uncomfortable and not really interested in the conversation he is having with the ‘thug’ looking man. The back to back close up shots of their facial expressions proves to us the difference of mood between the two characters. When the camera goes on the first male character the facial expression given, looks to be uncomfortable and anxious, while the other character all we see is excitement. This makes us wonder what the first character is worried about.
We then go into the next scene were we see two French maids both standing outside a room, One maid says to the other ‘this gentlemen has been regular costumer, he pays double, for double’ this clearly states to us that the French maids are not there for just cleaning but we soon learn that they are taking off their clothing to please the costumer. The stereotype made from this is that French people are naturally seductive people from the stereotype they have with the world and having the two French maids doing this sort of act is not surprising to the viewers. We see a long angle shot of a far east Asian man sitting on a bed with a rob on, this indicating that he is has got ready for something. We then see a medium shot of the back of the Asian man and the two French maids in front of him. The taller maid seems to be standing uncomfortably while the other maid looks confident. We then see a close up shot of notes of cash sitting on the dressing table. The understanding that the two maids have come to do something for the Asian costumer become reality.
