How is the representation of disability created through the use of camera, editing sound and Mise en scene in this clip from Secret Diary of a Call Girl?

The representation of disability is created by the camera shots. When the scene begins we first see a tilt down of the camera when Blake’s character is revealed. The call girl‘s reaction shows how she has to adjust to the disabled person. Another factor which confirmed the character was disabled was the wheelchair he is in, which is symbol for disability. Editing also reveals the person’s disability. The shot where Blake’s father is lifting him from the wheel chair and laying him down on the bed is another factor which exposes the fact that Blake is dependent on others. A jump cut from the house to his father’s van shows his father feelings as he is really anxious and worried. The reason why he is worried is because he has just left this son with another person that has not adjusted to his disability and has to look after him. The sound is the most important part in the sequence as the character cannot move about too much, so it is the sound that explains and shows the representation of disability. The sound explains the boy’s feelings and how his disability affects his life, he says I’m not really used to someone touching me and he breaths heavily at this point in the scene which clarifies his disability isolates him from normal common experiences that boys have and it also connotes his low self-esteem as he’s breathing really heavily. However at the beginning both the call girl and the Blake say email at the same time revealing that Blake is not completely cut off from the world. He arranged the occasion via email which shows he can have freedom at any time.
